Why Dermal Fillers?

The natural aging process causes areas to lose elasticity and decrease in volume. This is results in a tired aged appearance. Genetics and lifestyle choices play a vital part in our facial features. Dermal fillers are not just for aging skin but can also be used to enhance natural features through facial contouring.

When we are unhappy with our appearance this can effect things such as mood and confidence. Most of us have areas that we want to enhance such as lips lines, facial creases, wrinkles, cheeks and shallow contours.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are products injected under the skin to replace or increase volume in a way that aims to improve the aesthetics of the face. Hyaluronic acid fillers are seen as the most safe product to hit the industry. Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate found naturally in the human body. Around half the hyaluronic acid in the body is present in the skin, where it binds to water to help regain moisture. When it is injected into the tissue around the surface of the skin it reduces wrinkles and adds volume.

“Hyaluronic acid is a ubiquitous carbohydrate (or more accurately a mucopolysaccharides) found in the human body in interstitial fluid, the vitreous humour of the eye and in synovial fluid to name a few. It consists of a repeating units N-Acetylglucosamine and glucuronic acid and can be extremely long. In the body it is continuously made and broken down, with a half life of just 24 to 36 hours in the skin. As we age the production slows. but the half life remains the same, so total quantity is reduced. This forms part of the reason the is a decrease in skin volume.”

How it works?

As a result of the natural properties of the hyaluronic acid the dermal filler produces a result that feels natural due to its soft gel. This last for 6-12 months depending on the brand of the dermal filler and the individuals metabolism. An extra benefit recently discovered is that it assists the production of collagen. Therefore contributing to a further reduction to the appearance of facial creases and wrinkles.

Precise injection technique helps to maximise the overall effect achieved. Deep lines caused by volume loss are best treated with deep injections into the dermis. Fine lines are best corrected with shallow injections into the mid dermis (superficial to the skin).
